The lake level is 554.33 and stable with one generator running continuously. They closed down the spillway gates. They are very reluctant to drop the level below the top of the power pool of 553.75. The White River at Newport is 18.83 feet and fairly high but they could let out much more if they wanted to. The surface water temperature is 55-degrees and dropping again with the cold nights. It is about where it normally is this time of year. The water is clearing on both the main lake and in the creeks again with the reduced water releases and is at a good color and level but not much room for spring rains. It is hard to believe we are heading to the last part of December already. Fishing is fairly good with Bass, Crappie and Stripers all biting but you have to work for them. Go out with a small moon and cloudy days before the cold fronts come through and the wind starts and the high pressure begins for best results. Stay until dark or it rains you out. When the sunny days with no wind and cold nights and big moon first begin it is not so good. The cold fronts are coming through at least once a week and sometimes twice this time of year and can make fishing tough for a few days. When this happens in March it can be very tough fishing. March is my least favorite time for fishing unless you can pick your time and conditions carefully. I am heading out now and will see what happens. I need my fix. Fortunately I do not have to plan ahead and can be on the water in minutes fishing one of Scuba Steve's brush piles and do not have to travel far or haul and launch a boat.
