Caught on the Bink's Jigging Spoon.
The lake level is 560 even and they have cut back on generation and have not even got to the top of the power pool of 555.75 yet. They are now running 1-1/2 generators for about 14-hours with less scheduled for tomorrow. The lake did drop 2-1/2 in the last 24-hours which is still pretty quick but it is hot and dry with no chance of much rain for the next week. The White River at Newport is 7.15 feet and very low. They continue to hold the area lakes up too high and nobody knows why but the Southwestern Power Administration has most of the control of the generation schedule when the lakes are in the power pool. Their distribution area has temperatures near 100 and you would think they needed power somewhere but I guess there is plenty without generation. I know it is hot here and going to get hotter. The surface water temperature is 83-degrees and will increase this week. Some rain could come just in time for the holiday weekend with cooler temperatures. We need rain badly. The thermocline is at 31-feet with cloudy water below that but not bad visibility from the surface down to about 27-feet. You cannot tell water clarity from looking at a fish finder or the thermocline.I have never seen a summer thermocline below 35-feet in 30-years of diving. The larger Walleye are just below the thermocline and are best caught with the Bink's Jigging spoon. You can clip a weight in front of a crank bait and drag it around the lake and catch some but it is not a very good use of your $2,500 live scope. Some nice Crappie have moved in on the brush piles and are roaming looking for baitfish and are spooky. Catch one or possibly two and they scatter but will come back in a few minutes if there are baitfish there. There are plenty of baitfish under my dock including bith shad and creek minnows and in Blackburns Creek with some White Bass and smaller Bass on them. The predominate southerly wind should blow most of them out to the other side this week. Striper fishing has slowed but a few are being caught. They have gone deep. The White Bass always move in shallower this time of year and roam banks in about 25-30 ft. of water a few feet off the bottom. I am not seeing as much top-water bass as I was in the cooler weather several days ago. There is less floating algae in the creeks than there was but still some. There will be more with this hot wave. It moves around with the wind. I have not seen an algae bloom in the water so far but we have not had 90-degree surface water temperatures like we usually do in early August. Things are changing rapidly and you have to be out there every day to give an accurate report.
