Scuba Steve with a couple. He is out there every day. Sammich with bread and butter on two fillets with pepper and a slice of onion.Nothing else.
The l;ake level is 556.70 and has dropped 3.25 inches in the last 24-hours with 1-3/4 generators running for 20-hours. It is dropping quickly with the dry weather and fairly heavy generation. They seem to be in a pattern of getting it down to the top of the power pool and then cutting way back and holding the level too high. It is almost like they want to flood us out. The White River a Newport is 8.43 feet and still low indicating not much is being released anywhere. Norfork Lake is the only one above the top of the power pool. If they cannot manage it in a dry August there is not much chance in a wet spring. January and August are our driest months and May and November the wettest. Someone should tell the people managing the lake levels. The surface water temperature is 84-degrees with a thermocline at 30-feet in Blackburns area with very cloudy water under the thermocline but fair clarity down to there. The schools of larger crappie, according to Scuba Steve's Records, usually move in to his brush piles about the 25th of August but they are here now and roaming and spooky. Get one or maybe two and they are gone but not far away and not for long. You can either wait them out or keep moving. Use a minnow on a slip float about 12-15 feet down over brush or a small Bink's Spoon dropped on top of the brush. I will switch to a Bobby Garland Blue Ice Baby Shad soon but not yet. Spearguns are also working but you are only allowed 7 Crappie. I guess they think it is easier Scuba Diving so they should give it a try. It is not but it is just as much or more fun. 1/2 the limit and twice the fun is the old saying. I like both but never keep a limit anyway. The limit for Walleye spearfishing is two and that is very difficult right now diving. They are in the cloudy water. The Striper fishing is getting tougher now and they are moving deeper down into the oxygen bubble and not biting very well. Live scopes are not helping them bite. They cleaned a lot of them out a few weeks ago though. Go out on the end of a long main lake point where it drops off in about 35-ft. of water and drop a white with red eye 1/2 ounce Binks Spoon and tap bottom and snap it up 5-6 feet and let it drop on slack line. Keep the spoon and line straight up and down and do not drag it or troll. Go against the wind with your trolling motor. After you master this technique you will catch fish whether you invest $2,500 on a live scope or not. At least they can see the fish that are not biting.I paid $2,500 for my boat 20-years ago and it seems to catch a few fish. I like Champoin Boats. Blackburns Resort goes on their winter rates on September 3rd and you can get a 1-bedroom cabin for $69/day and a free stall for your boat at our dock. You can launch and park right here with no need to go elsewhere. 2,3,4 bedrooms are priced accordingly. We only have two prices. Memorial Day to Labor Day and the rest of the year. We do not have 3-tiered pricing to get more out of you in the spring and fall. All cabins are individual with no duplexes and all have big covered porches or screened-in porches to get out of the weather. They do not have to be screened in as we have no mosquitoes but you do need to be able to get out of the sun and weather especially if you smoke. We do have a few chicks and tiggers though so it is best to stay out of the high grass. Compare prices and call Debbie at 870-492-5115 for a reservation. Blackburns is the first to fill up and we do not want you to have to pay much more some where else for less. It is nice here and the price is right. We like our many repeat customers and do not want them to pay too much. Scuba Steve will show you where his brush piles are located and he has some good ones.
