Scuba Steve with some nice ones diving in 30-ft. of water on Blackburns Brush Piles Sunday morning. He will show you where when you get here.
The lake level is 558.45 and has dropped over 5-inches in the last 24-hours with both generators running continuously and no sign of stopping. The White River at Newport is 8.59 feet and still low. They have run for 4-days straight and the lake is dropping quickly. The surface water temperature is 88-degrees and the water remains clear with a thermocline starting at 30-feet and very cold at 35-feet with a visibility of 5-6 feet at this depth. The water near the shore is very clear. It is hot and getting hotter with very dry conditions with no rain in the forecast. Boating, Swimming, Diving and Fishing conditions are excellent and the lake is in great condition. Some algae is floating in the creeks in the shallow water. The wind has been light and variable with not much moving around. When the wind shifts to from the North the weather cools a bit but it is from the south now. The humidity is high and there is dew in the grass in the mornings keeping it green. If you are fishing go out early, take the middle of the day off and go out again about 6:PM. The morning bite is the best but several nice bass are being caught starting at dusk. They hang out on deep brush during the day and feed near the shore late evening. Smaller schools of Crappie are roaming brush piles but others are still in open water on shad. Walleye are in 40-ft. of water near the bottom near big chunk rocks especially on long main lake points near the drop-off. A few Catfish are being caught on live bait at night but they do not like this quickly dropping water much. It is a good time to catch some nice Bluegill on shallower brush on Crickets and small spoons or minnows. Worms are catching the smaller ones. White Bass are in front of Mallard Point Docks across from the river channel in 25-30 ft. of water and biting Spoons and trolling Rooster Tails. I do not troll or fish for White bass but they are fun to catch when fishing for real fish gets difficult. After eating Walleye, Crappie and Flathead Catfish from Norfork lake you will throw them away,. If you want to see some gar just put a light out off a dock and wait for the shad to come it after dark. They run all of the other fish off and need to be thinned out badly. I have never seen so many and big ones too.
