Norfork Lake Arkansas near Mountain Home in the Ozarks Mountains Region Fishing Report and Lake Condition by Scuba Steve from Blackburns Resort and Boat Rental.

This guy stayed at Blackburns Resort and saved $550/week on his Cabin and Boat Rental from where he was staying and said it was better here. One Happy Man. Image title

The lake level is 553.75 stable and remains right on the top of the power pool. They refuse to go below it very much. The White River at Newport is 8.15 feet, low and dropping. There has been no generation for three days. The wind has dried things out but we are to get some on Tuesday and Thursday this week with a cold front cooling things way down on Saturday. At least they are not as cold as March but still slow fishing. Bass fishing was not as good as it has been yesterday with the very warm weather. There were some Bass coming up this morning with the start of the top-water bite. The shad do not have to spawn to have a top-water bite like some think but when they do the striper top-water will be in full swing. It is close. The plankton gets blown into shallow water with the heavy winds and the shad follow drawing the Bass first.  Plankton cannot propel themselves, eat phytoplankton and is the main food for Threadfin Shad. Gizard Shad are much larger and also eat insect larva.  Both shad and Bluegill spawn when the surface water temperature get to about 70-degrees and the fish feed shallow like crazy. A Spitin Image is excellent for top-water bass. I do not fish in the dark or troll but a good place to start in the mornings is back in the creeks where the wind has been blowing heavily into and grub or spoon until they start to come up. Creature baits also work. The North wind blew for several days and the fish moved back into Blackburns Creek and several are staging and pre-spawn feeding. They did not move back out with the South wind this time.  The water temperature is in the low 60's on the main lake and mid 60's in the shallow water in the creeks and things will really start to happen soon. I like late fall fishing in November but from now until the first of June is the best fishing of the year especially when the first thermocline forms shallow in 12-14 feet of water and the crappie and walleye move to main lake points on brush. I will let you know when this happens. We have three kinds of Crappie on Norfork, White crappie, Black Crappie and the Hybrid Blacknosed Crappie that were stocked several years ago. They have really taken off. Walleye, all kinds of Crappie, Bluegill, Kentucky Bass and Flathead Catfish are the best to eat on Norfork Lake but the Temperate Bass are OK if you cut the red meat out. It just does not leave much. Blackburns Resort and Boat rental continuse to be the home of the $59/day one bedroom cabins, $59/day two bedrooms with three and four bedrooms priced accordingly.
