The lake level is 553.63 and has dropped 2-1/2 inches in the last 24-hours. It was 555.4 on this date last yesr. They closed the sluice gates a bit and they are now equivalent to 2/3rds of a generator. The White River at Newport is 7.22 feet and they are regulating to 7-ft. and it is still low. There is no rain in the forecast for the next week and things are getting dry again. The normal ambient high is 87-degrees and we are to get up past that again this weekend. It is very nice out now. The surface water temperature is just under 90-degrees and dropping slowly. The thermocline is at 30-feet and the lake is stained a little green but not bad. More and more crappie are moving to the brush in schools and fishing is getting a little better. The big moon and dropping river is not making for good catfishing. Trollers are dragging deep diving crankbaits and touching bottom in the middle of shallower creeks and catching some bass. The best bite continues to be for Kentucky Bass and Bluegill on main lake brush. You can catch some crappie on small spoons but the best is using a slip float and live minnow and setting the depth about 5-feet deeper than you can see your bait. They are roaming and looking for cover holding bait fish. If you find schools of small bluegill you can be sure there are bass and catfish hearby. Fishing is only fair but things will get better after the holiday churning is over, the water clears up again and cools a bit. Late September and early October are typically excellent for fishing and most of the Queen Marys and Jet Skis are gone. Give Debbie a call at 870-492-5115 for a reservation.
