The lake level is 556.30 and is the same as it was at this time 24-hours ago. They closed sluice gates for a day and 1/2 but opened them up again at 8:AM this morning to an equivalent of 2/3rd of a generator. The White River at Newport is 5.03 feet and still very low. We did get a storm go through about 2:PM today and it blew and rained hard for a few minutes but nothing severe here. We needed the rain badly but not the wind. There is a good chance of rain for the better part of this week. We have been below average rainfall for the last three months in a row.Early July is a good time for storms in this area. The surface water is 88-degrees and the water is starting to clear after the holiday churning. One more to go. I have never seen it so busy both in town and on the lake. The best two ways to catch fish now are to spoon for stripers deep if you want to kill everyone that you catch (there are some walleye with them) and fish for bass at dark with a black light and salt craw. Some bass and smaller walleye are at and around  the thermocline at 19-22 feet and are biting plastic worms. Trollers are dragging stuff around at that depth but there is not much skill involved but they must need meat. Crappie are scarce and spooky if you catch one. Blackburns continues to have the best place and the best prices on both rental boats and cabins. Your first boat stall is free. Give Debbie a call at 870-492-5115 for a reservation. We will not charge you too much.
