Dave Titus with some nice ones yesterday.
The lake level is 555.87 and has dropped 7-inches in the last 24-hours with one generator running continuously and spillway gates open to an equivalent of another 1-2/3 generators. They are still predicting the level to reach the top of the power pool of 553.75 by May 2nd and it looks like they are on schedule to do so barring any big rains. The White River at Newport is 20.45 and dropping slowly. We are to stay cool and rain is predicted for several days this week. We are dry and could use some. The surface water temperature is in the early 60's and will not rise much anytime soon. The lake is trying to clear despite the quick level drop and you can see your lure down about 4-feet or more but is still a little tea colored. The bait fish are moving with the plankton and it is blowing into the creeks with the prevailing wind which has been from the north for a few days. When it warms back up and the wind shifts to from the south that will change. The black bass want to spawn and are resisting as much as possible due to the quickly dropping water. If they slow generation as they usually do when they hit the top of the power pool we might be able to salvage a decent spawn for them. The crappie are trying anyway and are having a hard time but have a better chance than the bass. Many are still full of eggs. A lot of short walleye are showing up and the size limit is 18-inches. Fishing is getting better everyday but it will take some warm nights to get the top-water bite really going. The lake level was 559.74 on this date last year and the surface water tmeperature was the same. Some crappie have moved back on Blackburns brush piles part way back in the creeks after spawn and the level is getting just right after being too deep. More and more will do this as the spawn progresses. Lots of fish have also moved in under the dock recently. Blackburns was full yesterday with people taking advantage of the best prices on both cabins and boat rentals in the Ozarks. Come on down and we will not charge you too much. You will like it here.
