Trout Fishing

World Record Trout Waters
The North Fork River is home to two of the largest brown trout ever caught, with several other line class records set in both the North Fork and White Rivers. The North Fork is also renowned for the coveted "Grand Slam" of trout fishing—landing all four trout species in a single day: brook, rainbow, cutthroat, and brown trout. Anglers have even pulled brook trout weighing over four pounds from these waters. On an average day, most fishermen can expect to catch between 20 and 60 rainbow trout, ranging from 13 to 20 inches in length. You can fish right from the bank, rent a boat with a motor, or book a half-day or full-day guided trip with professional guides. Blackburn’s is happy to assist in arranging the perfect fishing adventure for you.

Dry Run Creek - For Kids & Handicapped Only
For an unforgettable experience for the young anglers in your family, take them to Dry Run Creek. Located right next to the North Fork Hatchery, this vibrant stream is regularly stocked with trout weighing over 5 pounds. Reserved exclusively for children aged 16 and under, as well as individuals with disabilities, Dry Run Creek offers an exciting, action-packed fishing adventure. It’s a catch-and-release stream with artificial baits only, adding an extra challenge to the thrill of the catch. Just across the road, the North Fork River allows bait fishing, providing even more options for a fun-filled day on the water.

Float Trips
Trout fishing by boat is the most popular way to explore the river. You’ll find river boat rentals available at several docks along the shoreline. These flat-bottomed boats, known as "johnboats," are designed for shallow waters and typically come equipped with a 10hp outboard motor. While johnboats are stable, it’s recommended to hire an experienced river guide if you’re unfamiliar with navigating flat-bottomed boats in river conditions. Float trips can be booked for either half-day or full-day excursions, with some guides even offering a delicious shore lunch where they’ll cook your fresh morning catch. Guide services can accommodate groups of all sizes, from a single boat to fleets of up to forty boats for larger outings.

Fly Fishing
Fly fishing is a favorite pastime on the North Fork and White Rivers. Both are "tailwaters," meaning they’re fed by controlled water releases from upstream dams used for hydroelectric power. Because of these regulated releases, river water levels fluctuate daily. During certain times of the year, lower water releases create ideal conditions for some of the best wade fishing in the country. Anglers from around the world visit these rivers, hoping to land a world-record trout. If you’re a wade fisherman, give us a call—we’d be happy to help you plan your trip. Many fly fishers also enjoy casting from boats, offering a versatile way to experience the rivers.
