September 21,2024 Norfork Lake Arkansas Near Mountain Home Fishing Report by Scuba Steve from Blackburns Resort and Boat Rental.
9/21/2024
The lake level is 554.64 and has dropped 1.2 inches in the last 24-hours with 1-1/4 generators running for 8-hours. 12 hours are scheduled for today. The White River at Newport is 7.03 feet and still low. The surface water temperature is 80-degrees and the water clarity is 5-6 feet at 30-feet. The summer thermocline has been gone for two weeks and the lake has turned and is clearing. The fall foliage on the lake shore is starting to turn and everything is about a month early for some reason. We have been dry but seem to get a rain everytime we need one. The lake is in excellent condition and at a good level for swimming, boating, scuba diving and fishing but fishing is just fair. You can beat the bank early and late with a crank bait but catch mostly small bass. Most are Kentuckies part way back in the creeks. There is a top-water bite most days early and late but again mostly small bass. Your best bet is to spoon brush piles in 25-35 feet of water and catch Walleye, Bass, Crappie and Bluegill but not very many. You can also try live minnows just above the brush on slip floats at sunset. Some Stripers are showing up on the same brush. They have moved north out of the deep water and most are gone from the dam area. Not many are being caught but some are near Robinson Point. Bink reports the fishing was better this morning than it has been and he was spooning in 35-40 feet of water and catching several Striper and Walleye when he reeled up fast after tapping bottom. He said shad were everywhere. The Stripers were not big but in the 5-8 pound range. The bite started at 7:15 AM and was over a 9:AM and there was no top-water. The fish that I am cleaning are void of food and are getting skinny but that is normal for this time of year. It is hot out today but the coming cooler water will get the bite going again. Scuba conditions are good and people are getting some nice Walleye and Crappie on brush in 25-35 feet of water with the Walleye being the deepest. October looks to be good fishing but it is not usually the case as the lake has turned a month early. Unless we get a big rain, it looks to be excellent this fall. Thanksgiving time is alway good fishing especially for big Crappie and Bass. The night bite for Stripers can be good with a stick bait just prior to the full moon in November when they go to the bank to feed at dark. Fish for Walleye with a soft plastic in the evening on shadowy banks and switch to a stick bait at dark. Main Lake point brush piles will hold big Crappie and Bass and the best bite will be just at sunset until it is too dark to see. There are still several big boats and jet skis out there especially on weekends. It is time for them to get winterized and off the lake before it is too late and leave the lake to the fishermen. Blackburns resort and Boat Rental is still the home of the $69/day one bedroom cabins and a free stall for your boat comes with a cabin rental of 2-days or more.
