The White River at Newport is 7.37 feet and very low indicating not much water is being released anywhere. We received 1/2 inch of rain yesterday but overall a little less than normal. The level has been very stable for several months and has been near the top of the power pool of 553.75. It should make for a good spawn if it stays steady for a few more weeks. The surface water temperature is still in the high 50's and has struggled to get and stay above 60 with the cold fronts and cool nights coming through at least once a week. It warms up and then cools down with the fish following the warmest water. The lake is very clear and does not warm as fast as stained water. Bass and Crappie are staging for spawn but have held off so far waiting for warmer water. The females are full of eggs with blood lines and the males have moved back in the creeks. It is to get very warm this weekend and it may be just enough to get them started. Several bass are back in the creeks shallow and some are still on main lake brush with some still in open water on shad. Walleye have finished spawning and are feeding next to the shady  banks especially in the evening and are liking both creature baits and 3-inch grubs. Trollers are catching some dragging crank baits in about 10-15 feet of water on pea gravel banks. The White Bass have spawned and are back downstream. They spawn steadily several times a year. People cleaning them think they have not spawned yet but they do not spawn all of their eggs every time and start growning more. Put on a 3-inch creature bait on a 1/8th ounce jig head and work banks partway back in the creeks for some nice Black Bass. The top-water bite for stripers, white bass and bass usually starts about Aptil 15th when the water gets to the mid 60's and gets better and better until early June and then tapers off but does not quit. Walleye and stripers go deep as the water warms in July and August and then a jigging spoon is the best. The best overall fishing is when the first shallow thermocline forms in early May. The lake overall is in excellent conditionand at a good level and it looks to be a good spring so far. I am glad March is over. Blackburns Resort and Boat Rental is still the home of the $59/day one bedroom cabins and $79/day two bedrooms with three and four bedrooms priced accordingly and come with a free stall for your boat at our dock.
