October 21,2023 Norfork Lake Arkansas near Mountain Home in the Ozarks Mountains region Fishing Report and lake Conditions by Scuba Steve from Blackburns Resort and Boat Rental.

The lake level is 553.29 and creeping up with about as much water being let out for the minimum flow as is coming in from the river. The lake level has been very stable for several months. They are reluctant to drop it lower than 553. Both generators are still inoperable. The surface water temperature is 69-degrees and dropping very slowly with the warm ambient temperatures. The weather has been very nice but we are getting dry again. The water usually clears after the lake turnover, which occurred early this year, but has been slow to do so far. The White River at Newport is 3.61 feet and very low indicating not much water is being released anywhere. The water is homogenous down past 40-feet and there is little oxygen past that and few fish are below that level. Some fish of different species are in open water on shad and others are on or near brush piles in 18-30 feet of water. Most fish are not feeding heavily and are difficult to catch now. Crappie, Kentucky Bass and Bluegill are the best bite with a few Smallmouth mixed in. Some walleye are on main lake point brush that the wind has been blowing into but not as many as a few weeks ago. Some Bass are shallow and feeding on crawdads and can be caught on 3-inch or smaller creature baits. The best method for crappie is to set quietly over a brush pile on the main lake and use a slip float and live minnow and set your bait about 5-feet deeper than you can see it. Small Spoons are also working but not as well. The fish are schooled and roaming looking for baitfish. No bait fish around the brush no crappie. Big Bluegill are biting crickets off docks and shallow brush. The moon is getting bigger and the catfishing has slowed with it. They will really slow as the water cools. Bink is still catching stripers on his spoon part way back in deeper creeks and they are moving upstream. If there is an after dark bite for them this year it will be near the full moon in November slow rolling a stickbait on The flats north of Thumb Point or in frot of the walleye rearing pond north of Cranfield Island. They go there to feed at dark but that does not always happen and has been less lately with the absence of the larger stripers. The meat hunters are targeting the stripers heavily and not giving them a chance to grow. There are a lot of them dragging live bait and umbrellas or clipping a weight in front of a crank bait and dragging it around through schools of shad. It does not take much skill to catch them but when the bite gets tough they do not know any other way. White Bass are showing up again on shad. They are quite easily caught and are fun. The lake overall is in great condition and at a good level and things look good for the late fall bite so far but it is slow coming. The fish are there.
