The lake level is 557.70 and has risen steadily for a couple of weeks with quite a bit of rain mostly in two events. They had been generating a lot but have slowed down with the rule change effective April 15th lowering the level on the White River at Newport. We can not expect much of level lowering in the next several weeks unless we have a drought and that seems unlikely with the rain and cold fronts every week for several months. The surface water temperature is 54 on the main lake and 58 in Blackburns Creek and that reverses when a cold front comes through and cools the shallow creeks faster than the deep main lake. The fish do not know what to do but the crappie have started spawning and the bass want to very badly. When it warms up they move to the creeks to stage for spawn and then it gets cold and they move back out to main lake brush. Now there are a lot of fish in the wind blown creeks. Smaller paddle tailed grubs, jigs and creature baits are all working on a jig head casting to the shore and bringing them in slowly to the boat. Several fish are hitting in about 8-ft. of water. Crappie, bass and walleye can all be caught in this manner. Catfish are also showing up in the creeks and can be caught on the same lures and also throw lines with live shiners. The top-water bite varies with the weather but is best at sunrise after warm nights. It has been windy and hard to fish most days but some nice fish are being caught everyday. When you try and get out of the wind sometimes the fish are there and sometimes they are not. You cannot alway fish in the best place. The lake is stained from the big rains but is starting to clear now with the lower generation. It is to get warm later next week and that should get the top-water bite going every morning. Come on down to Blackburns. We will not charge you too much and your first boat stall is free. All cabins have covered porches with no duplexes and you can launch right here and there is plenty of parking. The grass is green, the flowers are blooming and the mushrooms are popping up.
