The lake level is 551.93 and has dropped 2-inches in the last 24-hours with more generation than before and it is dropping more quickly. The water surface temperature is 57 degrees and has been virtually the same since the last report. It is dry here and we could use some rain. The lake in general is in good condition and at a good level but the fishing is only fair. Crappie and walleye fishing has slowed from a couple of weeks ago but the catfishing, bluegill and Kentucky Bass have been good. Most of the big largemouth are in open water on shad and are not on their winter banks yet because of the higher than normal water temperature. They will move there when the temperature drops to about 50. Trollers are catching some white bass and a few small stripers in the 5-9 pound range. Some very large bluegill are being caught. Some call them bream, some call them perch but to avoid any confusion I will call them bluegill. They are excellent eating if not the best especially the big ones. Just fillet one, fry in beer batter, add black pepper on two pieces of buttered bread and that is all you need. Try to stop at one if you can. No red meat on these fish. We have had very warm weather followed by cold fronts with wind and big temperature swings for a month and the fishing changes everytime this happens. It can go from 70 to 40 in just a matter of an hour and the fishing can get slow right when it clears up with high pressure. We only get a day or two of light winds until the next front comes through. The fishing does not stop but it sure slows down. It gets better the longer the high pressure stays and continues until the wind picks up with the cold front and this happens over and over. Sometimes twice a week. Right now we are in a transition with most crappie moved off the shallower brush into deeper water and bigger bass out in open water suspended in about 40-ft. on shad. Trollers are finding some schools of white bass and some smaller stripers in the 5-9 pound range also in the 40-ft area. The umbrella rigs are working the best for them. Some report that they are using A-rigs, which are Alabama rigs, but the Umbrella ones are much bigger and catch more fish trolling. The Alabama rigs are better for casting and are not allowed in most bass tournaments, but there are not many fish on the banks except for after sunset until dark. The crappie that I am catching are good sized but the numbers are low. It was just the opposite a couple of weeks ago. Things change and you have to be out there everyday to keep on them. Doing the same thing and going to the same place everyday will not work very long. The big Black Bass are there and will move to the known winter banks as soon as the water temperature drops. It should be near 50 by now. Fishing overall again is just fair but some nice fish are being caught everyday and especially catfish for some reason. Come on down to Balckburns. We are open all year, your first boat stall is free and there will be no price increases. Veterans and Police are especially welcome.
