The lake level is 564.48 and is exactly what it was at this time yesterday with very little generation. We received about 1/2 inch of rain yesterday and it really helped green things up after very little moisture for the entire month of August. The corps of engineers are now predicting the lake will be at about 555 by October 24th. Blackburns group put in some shallower brush piles last winter anticipating having high water again this summer due to lake managemenet and they are paying off now with crappie, bass, bluegill and walleye being the best bite. There has been a fish kill down by the dam recently and most fishermen have moved away from that area. It usually occurs a little later after Labor Day and is caused by the high water washing Biological Oxygen Demand into the lake and using up all of the oxygen as it decays. The surface water temperature was 83 degrees and the lake was stained green when I went fishing yesterday afternoon. I went to one of the above mentioned brush piles in 27 feet of water which is just above the thermocline about 3:30 PM and the fish started biting immediately. A 1/2 ounce Binks Many Shad was the lure of the day. I caugh three keeper walleye and a couple of throw backs, three keeper crappie and three very nice bass in the 3-4 pound range in less than an hour. My trolling motor died and I came in. Bad battery. Drop the spoon directly in the brush near the bottom and snap it up about 3-4 feet and let it drop on slack line. If you feel resistence do not set your hook. The brush almost feels like a fish and you will set the hook right into the brush and make it difficult to get loose. Most of the fish will hit on the drop or after you pull the lure off the brush. Walleye, bass and crappie are all in the same place. 25-27 feet of water near the bottom on or near structure. The water is stained green and you can only see your lure down a couple of feet. Everytime I think it is clearing a bit it stains again. It usually gets more clear after the boat traffic goes away and the lake cools a bit after Labor day but is is good for fishing now. Just work main lake points where there is brush at about 27 feet. You have to get down there to them. Bluegill are shallower just outside the buckbrush and a Bobby Garland Baby Shad is working pretty good. Blackburns Winter Rates for cabins goes into effect on September 7th and you can get a cabin for $59/day with a free normal sized boat stall. You cannot beat that anywhere. We know where the fish are and will help you. Binks did catch some White Bass yesterday along with Walleye and that is the first that I have heard of anybody catching very many. That is good news as they were almost gone from last year's fish kill. The lake has a good fish population for most everything except big stripers. Too many small ones in the 7-10 lb. range have been caught before they can grow and the low ozygen affects the biggest ones the worst. Also very few fingerlings were stocked this year affecting the future. Walleye fishing has picked up the slack with the best bite for them that I have seen in years. Come on down to Blackburns. We will not charge you too much.
