The lake level is 570.16 and rising just a bit with 1.3 inches of rain last night. The surface temperature is 65 degrees and has not moved much with the cool weather. This is to continue for several days. It is slow warming this year. The creeks are stained just a bit and the main lake is clear. There is some pollen in the water. Crappie should have finished spawning by now but are mixed up. Even some very large ones have not spawned yet. Some are finished, some are in progress and some are still staging. Just yesterday most of the fish caught were males in 18-19 feet of water indicating the fry have left the nest and the males are post spawn feeding. I am casting a Bobby Garland blue Ice jig or a 2-inch white twister tail tipped with a minnow over the partially submerged wood and letting it sink about 10-12 feet on a 1/16th ounce jig head. They are hitting it agressively when the conditions are right. Go back in the creeks and fish the old shoreline. Bass are there too as are about everything else.  The walleye are a little deeper near the bottom. They have not moved to the flats yet and are roaming with the bait fish. There are a lot of bait fish out there but not as many as there will be with the bass spawn also being slow this year. A few are starting the make a nest now though. A few stripers and hybrids are also on the old shoreline. The white bass are scarce and the ones that are there are small. Work it with a swim bait and it is hard to tell what you will catch.  The smallmouth bite was as good as I have seen it in years for about a month but has slowed some now. Same with flatheads. It is time for blues and channels now. Throw lines are still catching some mixed cats baited with perch. There is a top water bite early some days but not every day. Go to their normal places and watch for them but if they do not come up you can still call them up with a spook if you can work it properly. They will not be very deep. After that switch to a swim bait.Sunny days are the best for top water. Go back in the creeks, work the old shoreline with a swim bait, creature bait or three inch worm. Go out a little deeper for walleye and crappie in barely exposed wood or exposed big logs. You will be surprised what you get. The first sunny day after a cold front do not expect much but it gets better after that. It is good to just be out there.  Some good fish are being caught every day. 17-20 feet is best overall. Do not use heavy jig heads.  Let lures sink slowly and count down until you know what is going on. Blackburns still has cabins for $59/day with a free stall for your boat and you can still launch here so far. We have the best set up around.
