The lake level is 552.99 and is creeping up to the top of the power pool of 553.75 despite the dry conditions. The White River at Newport is 3.76 feet and very low indicating not much water is being released anywhere. The surface water temperature is 74-degrees and rising and the creeks vary from clear to a bit stained with the wind velocity and direction and the main lake is clear with a visibility of about 9-feet in the Blackburns Creek area. The lake overall is in excellent condition and at a good level for fishing, boating and swimming. The Crappie and Bass spawn is winding down and more and more fish are moving to the main lake brush piles. Scuba Steve has some good ones and will show you where when you get here. The Catfish and Bluegill spawn is just beginning and the Flathead Spawn has not begun yet, They are the last ones. Catfish are biting. Work brush for Bass and Crappie on main lake points and look for shad partway back in main lake creeks where the wind has been blowing into. Keep a top-water lure handy as Bass, White bass and smaller Stripers can come up at any time. When they go down drop a spoon just under the shad. 3-inch live Bluegill are working well on jugs and throw lines for Channel Cats. Hybrid Stripers have been overharvested by the many guides trying to out-do each other and are scarce. There are too many guides for the size of the lake and they are hurting the lake and killing too many fish. Their boats look like B-52 dashboards and they dog the fish all day everyday. There used to be about 5-6 and now there are about 25. Walleye have moved to brush on the main lake and off gravelly banks in about 16-feet of water and are biting spoons and Lindy rigs trolling. Brush piles do not help trollers much. Blackburns Resort and Boat Rental continues to have the best Resort and the best prices on both cabins and boat rentals in the Ozarks.
