Scuba Steve With Some Of Yesterday's Catch With Bink's Guide ServiceImage title

Bink invited me to go fishing with him yesterday and we were on Live in the Boat On KTLO Radio 97.9 FM at 8:45 AM on Thursdays. I like listening to Bob Knight and the gang. We sure had fun. The weather was perfect, nice and warm and the wind was light until late morning when it picked up and the fish stopped biting. I was spooning and Bink was throwing the grub.  We both did about the same. We caught our fish in the Brushy Creek area in about 36 feet of water near the bottom on a flat. It was not easy but we caught some good ones. The reports that the fish are in a feeding frenzy and the bite is on is not working for me. I thought maybe it was just this part of the Lake but Darrel has not been doing much better at his end lately. There were no birds available to guide us so we used the locator.  Like I said we are catching good fish but are putting in a lot of time doing it. The surface temperature ranges from 55 early and 58 afternoon. They have been running both generators 24/7 for several days and are dropping the lake fast. It is now 556.22 and it shows they can do it if they want to. More rain is scheduled for the area Saturday night and Sunday. We seem to be in a pattern of rain every week. I never have the best luck fishing with a high pressure settled in and the lake dropping rapidly. I will spoon brush piles again today. I like that best.  There sure is a lot of shad, especially at the mouth of creeks with flats on them. Many do not have fish on them. I am not seeing very many giant stripers brought in with most of them in the 5-8 lb. range. We will see what January and the cold weather brings. My friend Leonard Darr is enjoying some of these as we speak.

It looks like heavy rain is on the way. Monte Manchester from KTLO said it looks to be just like last week and he is the best weather forecaster around. I listen to him every morning on Cable channel TV 19. They started running one generator yesterday and have dropped the lake a few inches. It is now 557.69 but should rise significantly if we get what is forecasted. The crappie are biting off the dock on the brush. Any fishing report will only be good through today and everything will have to be checked out again before another report of any value. Some good fish were just starting to move to the bank but that should all change. We will let you know.

John Kahlenbeck with a Nice Striper. Him, Jim and Smiths Caught fish all week. Image title

Another Beautiful day in the Ozarks at Blackburns. Sunny and warm. it was cold Sunday morning. There were some good fish caught. I went out in the late evening to check out the night bite for stripers and fished until 6:30 and caught nothing after dark. The moon was big and high in the sky and it was bright out but no fish. Usually the walleye bite before dark and stripers after dark but not last night. That does not mean that is the case all over the lake because I only fish near Blackburns creek and do not normally need to go far. I use soft plastics early and switch to suspending stick baits after sunset. Between sunset and dark is my favorite time to fish. There were no fish on my favorite banks. They were there before the lake level came back up. The guys that caught stripers and hybrids yesterday caught them during the day on spoons. I will be spooning brush today. Bink is going out to check his part of the lake to pre-fish for his clients later this week. Kahlenbecks and Smiths just left and caught some good fish all week including a big walleye. They usually pick the night bite but not this year. I am not sure it is going to happen. Sometimes it does not. It always happens in the spring because they are simulating a spawn not just feeding like in the fall. When they are schooled on the flats they usually stay there for a while. Water temperature was 60 last evening and the level is 558+. The lake is clearing with the creeks perfect color for fishing. The level is too high for this time of year with more rain coming Thursday night.

The lake level is 557.80 and has come up 3-inches in the last 24-hours and 4.3 feet total since the 5-inch rains. They are generating some but it is time to let some water out boys. I know you must regulate the level at Newport at 12-feet but cannot understand why. I guess the winter wheat must be protected. Who made this rule anyway? No one knows. Just make sure the put and take trout get plenty of minimum flow on the rivers. It is to reach 60 degrees and be beautiful today with cooler temperature for tomorrow. The surface temperature is 63 degrees and dropping very slowly and the lake is clearing. The boys caught some nice fish yesterday. It is to frost tomorrow night. Check out our prices before you book and save money for gas and food. Call 1-800-635-0526. We have a big crowd for Thanksgiving and the full striper moon.

The lake has risen about two feet and still coming up. It is now 555.6 which is still at an excellent level. It will take a few days to clear but should not affect fishing much. We will see when the boys come in. I will go out later after some work is done. The dock road needs graded so off I go. Just so people understand the dock road is still technically a county road but is maintained by Me and my neighbor. We grade the road, trim the trees, buy the gravel and maintain the launch for our paying customers. There are plenty of other public accesses available for locals which are maintained by tax payers.

Joe Caught three of These Between Showers In Blackburns Creek.Image title

We have received 4-1/2 inches of rain in the last 2-1/2 days with heavy intermittant showers training across Norfork Lake. The creeks are running heavily and the lake is rising but has not come up too much yet and is at 553.53 and rising. It should come up a couple of feet depending on the level of generation. All fishing reports are off for now until we can get back out there and one fishing trip will not cover all of the bases. The best tip for now is to stay out of the brown water. The largemouth bass had moved partway back in the creeks and were feeding near and after dark shallow. I was just starting to catch all kinds of big bass and crappie there but we will see. Like I said all is off until we check things out. Blackburns has some very good fishermen here now and I can get you some good information. I suspect the smaller crappie and Kentucky Bass with stay on the brush. Joe Cebula Caught three nice fish between showers and fishermen are staying near the dock. If the night bite for stripers happens (it does not always do so) your best bet will be around the 25th of this month. Stay tuned for updates. Our Iowa friends (pictures to follow) caught some very nice stripers and hybrids around the Calamity Beach area on large shiners but that was yesterday. We are still getting downpours.

John Bornhop With Some Of Yesterday's Catch.Image title

It is raining today as predicted but everyone caught a lot of fish yesterday. Big stripers, hybrids, white bass, catfish, crappie, bass and bluegill. Joe Cebula caught 5 hybrids in the 3-5 pound range and some white bass. John Bornhop caught crappie, bluegill and catfish and others caught nice stripers and Kahlenbecks caught several too despite having motor problems. Fortunately you do not have to go far from Blackburns dock to get fish. They are predicting quite a bit of rain but it should not hurt much if there is no wind. So far so good. There are a lot of improvements going on here at Blackburns. Come on down and not spend too much.

It Was Windy Yesterday But Has Laid Down This Morning

Image title

It is a beautiful day here on Norfork lake with a high temperature to reach in the 60's with clear and sunny skies. Wish you were here. It was windy yesterday with the front moving in bringing high pressure. We missed all of the weather the day before with just a few sprinkles of rain and fishing was good all day and evening with the sun coming out before it set. Lake level is 553.35 and dropping slowly with intermittant generation. Surface temperature is 65 degrees this morning and the lake is in excellent condition. Kahlenbecks are due in and they fish all night and always catch fish. They dog those stripers and we are always happy to see them. Despite the wind Joe Cebula Caught some nice fish. John Bornhop is here and will get a report on the crappie. It is nice to have so many returning friends. I am only fishing brush piles and want walleye, Crappie, bluegill and Kentucky bass and am catching some everyday. I like spooning right in brush near the bottom. It works.

Crappie Fishing On Norfork Lake Arkansas By Scuba Steve from Blackburns Resort and Boat Rental

The water surface temperature is in the high 60's and dropping slowly. The fall foliage is not very impressive this year and will be peak in a few days. It is still beautiful here. Joe Cebula is catching some nice fish everyday including crappie. Some are small but there are some big ones in there too. They have moved to the brush in 25-32 feet and should stay there for a while with more very large ones joining them. They tend to stay put all winter despite the lake turnover which affects mostly open water fish. I have been turning several loose under the dock. Some bass are moving in with them.  Most brush piles are holding fish. I have been using a 1/4 ounce Bink's spoon but slip floats with minnows about 12-feet down right over the brush is working too. We carry live bait all year long here and on site fishing licenses too. Most places do not and do not want to pay the bond for the fishing license machine. This is perfect fishing weather. Scuba Steve likes those big crappie and caught a good one yesterday amonst some in the 10-11 inch range. I bet John might be able to catch some too. But not from the porch. Image title

Saturday Fishing On Norfork Lake By Scuba Steve From Blackburns Resort and Boat Rental

I went out in the late afternoon and the water temperature was 69 degrees and the wind was coming from the north at about 10 miles per hour. About 5-Pm the wind layed and the fish started biting. I caught some bluegill and crappie on the first brush pile and crappie and white bass on the next one. The big white bass have not moved in yet but one crappie was very large. I was using a 1/4 ounce Bink's spoon in 30-feet of water part way back in the creek. Joe Cebula reports he also was fishing brush and caught some bass, crappie and a walleye and was using his crappie rod with 6-lb. test and also using a 1/4 ounce Bink's spoon when he got hit hard and landed an 8-lb. Striper. Crappie rock is just now showing and there are fish all over it. The hard work putting in brush piles is now paying off. I wish more people would do it instead of camping on mine. I put them in for Blackburns customers and always put in a few new ones to give them advantage. This is a good time of year and the lake is in excellent condition and still dropping. The clarity is just right. Divers in cabin #10 report the visibility was just fair but they speared some nice fish but not a lot. I have been unable to dive for a few weeks but should be ready for next spring. Just had to start pole fishing a little earlier. We will let you know when the night bite for stripers starts so get those suspending stick baits running true and make sure the boat lights are working. Business has been good with most all cabins being full this month so far. People are taking advantage of our low winter rates and free boat stalls. Image title

Fall Foliage Report For Norfork Lake, Mountain Home and The Ozark Mountains

I have just returned from a driving trip from Mountain Home, Arkansas to Central Iowa and Back and had a chance to view the fall foliage changes in person. There was some rain in Southern Missouri but not much. The entire trip showed very dry conditions. The fall harvest was more complete in Missouri but the crops look good and will require little drying which will cut costs to farmers. The fall foliage is more pronounced in Iowa as expected and decreased as you go south which was also expected. It looks like we are still on schedule for a late October Peak here in Northern Arkansas. Blackburns Resort and Boat Rental Is Your fall Foliage headquarters for Northern Arkansas and the Ozark Mountains. If you book a trip to Blackburns the end of October you cannot go wrong but may have to drive a little north or south for peak. You will be in a good central location. The hills and roadsides here in the Ozarks will be beautiful and we will help you with a road trip. 1-800-635-0526
