The lake level is at 552.7 and is very stable even with the 2-inches of rain we got last week. They are generating just enough to equal the river inflow. The creeks go from green to clearing just about when they want to. You can see about 5-feet down on the main lake and the water next to the shore is clear. Surface temperature is 63 degrees and dropping very slowly. The people predicting colder water will make the fish explode are not right yet. I was doing better with the water in the higher 60's.  There are some open water fish just around the point from Blackburns Resort Creek toward Cranfield on the flats in front of the third dock by Mallard point.  They are mostly white bass with a few smaller Hybrids. More are just west of the 101 Bridge on the north side. They seem to be liking 50-feet of water 40-feet down but that varies with the time of day and the amount of sunshine. As far as i can tell the night bite with stickbaits has not happened. Sometimes it does not and I do not know how to predict that. There are a lot of shad and many of them do not have any fish under them. Crappie are on brush at 25-feet about 7-feet down and roaming. Pick out about 5-places and keep moving from one to another. They bite for just a few minutes and quit for two hours. They are very nice sized. A few walleye are with them. I try spoons first, minnows on a slip float next and then casting a grub and minnow over the brush and let it sink. They are right in the brush so use your marker buoy and go against the wind with your trolling motor. If this does not work I move. I am getting about 10 or 11 in a 2-3 hour period but they are 11-13 inches. The giant ones are alluding me again. I was catching them a month ago. I usually get bass on steep banks on drop offs this time of year but not yet. You umbrella trollers should do pretty well right now on open water fish. There are more shad than fish. I try not to predict but just tell you what is happening. I go out when the low pressure is just moving in and it rains me out and then after the high pressure has been around for a while. I have no confidence just after the rain or when the sun is first shining. I must have learned that somewhere or thought I did. I still try it during those times but seldom catch very many. I just like to be out. Blackburns Resort and Boat rental still has 1-bedroom cabins for $53/two people and 2-bedrooms for $65/four people and free boat stalls. Why pay more and we are open all year?

The front came through today and the fish were biting. These were a few caught. Mike Eakle is Fishing With Tom Kelly. He could not be fishing with a better person or a better fisherman. All are in the trophy pond. I hope Leonard Darr liked his limit of big crappy. He is my good friend and he loves crappie.

The fishing season does not close here on Norfork Lake Arkansas. The lake does not freeze over and fishing is good throughout the winter. You cannot walk on our water or drill holes in it.  Blackburns Resort and Boat Rental is open all year and has a boat ready for you to rent if you have already put yours in storage. If you are looking for a new place to stay or if your normal place is closed for the winter call 1-800-635-0526 and we will fix you up. Fishing is getting good here now. Water temperature is 64 degrees.

Bink reports catching some big stripers this morning on a spoon. It had been slow for a few days after the rain moved through. It rained hard and the wind blew. We received 1/2 inch of needed rain. It is sunny and cool now with highs near 60. We did get a frost but not before I picked my green tomatoes and peppers. This was the best garden I have had for years. The lake is in excellent condition and the surface temperature is 65+ degrees and the lake level is 552.65 and very stable and Newport is at 3.5 feet which has some slack if we get heavy rains. The lake is clearing and is good for fishing. I went fishing just when the rain started and caught fish as fast as I could bring them in. I came in and after the rain I could not get a bite. Cold fronts do shut them off. Kahlenbecks report catching stripers with nothing in them. I do not recall that happening before especially this time of year. We do not always get a night bite or a topwater bite for stripers in the fall but bass come up about anytime. There are a lot of shad and many schools do not have any fish under them. I am fishing for crappie and walleye and doing pretty good catching fish everyday using spoons and grubs and minnows. The trophy pond is full of big fish.

I went fishing yesterday and it was tough for me. I caught a few but had to work hard for them. i went to three places where the crappie are thick and could not get many to bite. Tried minnows, grub with minnow and spoon. Will try again today. It was beautiful out and no wind. Lake is in excellent condition. Stripers are moving south down the river as the lake cools. The cool nights are cooling it nicely. It is nice to have fall begin 1/3 way into November with highs to be near 70 and lows in the 40's for several days. We are getting dry again. The fall foliage is turning brown and falling with little or no color. My maple tree is not even turning red or the sumac. The lake level is stable with just a little generation to keep up with the river inflow. It will be getting dark at 4:30 by the 21st of December but that does not bother me much. I have not worn a watch for 21 years and go by the sun. If it helps the kids to not get on ther bus in the dark mornings that is fine with me. I hope that is the only reason. If they were worried about energy they would not start school so early after summer vacation and take spring breaks. I like fall fishing but am always sad to have diving season end. We are lucky to not have the lake freeze over and have no closed fishing season.

Scuba Steve likes diving and walleye too. Image title

Scuba Steve went diving yesterday and saw lot of walleye. Close to Blackburns too. Diving and spearfishing could not be better. They are on insides of mainlake points on brush in 20-feet of water near the bottom.

Found the walleye again yesterday and got some good ones. I was fishing too deep. They were all in brush and around brush in 18-22 feet of water with none deeper. The lake is clearing again and is at 71 degrees and dropping slowly as is the lake level. Crappie are also on shallower brush at the same depth. I got some good ones. The trophy pond is fully stocked with big fish.  If you can find brush in 20-ft. of water on the insides of main lake points there will be walleye on them. Walleye and crappie are now in their normal October places. Reports that the lake is turning over are wrong. This happened weeks ago. There have been no thermocline for a long time.  The visibility is good and getting better. Just right for diving. Spearfishing for walleye and crappie could not be better. I have not seen it better in years. Fish in the 24-inch range are not uncommon but there are also several short ones. All crappie I have been getting are from 11-15 inches with very few short ones. Some bass are also in 18-25 feet of water right in the brush.. A few black bass but many nice smallmouth. A lot of bass are still suspended and schooled and can come up anywhere there are shad. Big schools of shad are near Blackburns Creek but not a lot of fish under them. We have several good fishermen coming in next week and they will find the open water fish. If you are here they will help you. I like the walleye and crappie and prefer to stay near home. If you can learn to spoon right in brush it sure helps. I am using the 1/4 ounce White Bink's spoon with red on the bottom and nose and grub and minnow exclusively and am doing very well. Bink likes to cast and hop his 1/2 ounce spoon and is very effective with it. Cabins are still $53/day for two people and boat stalls are free. 1-800-635-0526 Weather is to be near 70 for the next week.

All of these went in the trophy pond. Better get fishing Tom.Image title

Lake level is 552.57 and stable with a few hours of running one partial generator in the afternoons. The lake is clearing with visibility a lot better than it was and a surface temperature of 71.5 degrees. Bink's Guide Service took me and my Uncle Walter Trembly from Indianola, Iowa fishing yesterday and we had a great time. The weather was beautiful and we caught some fish. That was just a bonus. Blackburns had a good turnout for Halloween. They get a lot of loot here. The new swimming pool is almost finished and looks great. It took a lot of cement and they are pouring the floor tomorrow. I may have to get a part time job to pay for it. Anybody need a Chemical Engineer that needs time off for fishing and diving? It is to be in the 80's today and cooling to the 70's for the next week. Best fishing is for crappie and walleye and then bass. The big ones are right in the brush.Image titleImage title
